Windchill in the Cloud

In almost every Windchill implementation we will be asked – do you have a cloud solution? Whilst the answer is most definitely ‘yes!’, it is important to understand what is meant by ‘cloud’ as it often has different meaning in different contexts.

Windchill+

As a solution, Windchill can be deployed on premise, cloud-based, SaaS based or in a hybrid manner. You may have seen that PTC has very recently released a SaaS (software-as-a-service) PLM platform, called Windchill+, it is the first of its kind: a feature rich PLM solution delivered entirely as a service for improved multi-enterprise collaboration and a fully connected digital thread. Whilst Windchill+ is very much the future, not all functionality is currently available.

Windchill may be deployed in private cloud, essentially the client’s cloud managed by the client’s IT staff  – not dissimilar from an on-premises deployment.

Allow us to save you time, with myPDS Cloud

There is also a fourth option available our customers, ‘myPDS Cloud’. On the myPDS Cloud, our in-house team of PLM consultants take complete responsibility for your Windchill PLM system.  A simple annual cost encompasses everything required to get started with PLM, or if you already have a Windchill environment our team will migrate your data. myPDS removes the burden from your IT team, and with all the reassurances that your data is secure, easily accessible, and system up to date and well maintained.

A key part of the service is that all upgrades, patches, security fixes and extended support (monthly health checks & remedial actions) are included in the cost.  The service also includes: standard technical support, PDM base package and a training package.

Summary

In conclusion, we believe that Windchill+ is most definitely the future for the cloud-based deployment of PLM. There are still some features missing and the scale of deployment does not currently fit all our customers.  Windchill may deploy on-premise or in a private cloud but for many of customers our recommendation is to utilise myPDS Cloud – it gives you all the benefits of SaaS today without waiting for features to become available.
